Summary of the lesson

 

Using case studies, this lesson aimed at understanding and handling cyberbullying. The child will become  aware of the sources and types of cyberbullying. S/he will be  encouraged to identify the bully, assess the seriousness of the situation, ask for help from adults and cope with the problem effectively.S/he will be empowered to protect themselves and their peers from cyberbullying using these skills.

What your child will learn 

  • Different sources and types of cyberbullying such as Fraping and Dissing.
  • To develop coping skills and will know what to do in case of cyberbullying. 
  • To be safe from potential harm, help others to identify and deal with such situations. 

How is it going to help your child 

  • To recognize the potential harm of social media 
  • To remain cautious and careful while being on social media
  • To know the ideal steps to be taken in times of need. 
  • To maintain better interpersonal relationships based on true and authentic interactions

Parental role & play 

 

Reassure the child: Reassure your child that you are there for them and will never judge them. They will need some support from your side to be able to open up about what they are going through, if they come across or are victims of any cases..

Discuss possible situations: Pose questions to them based on possible scenarios related to cyberbullying and guide them on how you will help them deal with the situations. 

Encourage them to share their experiences with you : Don’t judge or shout or lecture or belittle them later. Let them trust you that you will help them.

 

What to expect 

 

Expect the child to identify cases of different types of cyberbullying, assess the seriousness of the situation and take immediate action by informing the adults around them. They will be cautious in their interactions and sometimes be over- protective of their friends and siblings. 

 

Psychology insight 

 

Research  shows that adolescents are at a higher risk of depression if reported bullying. Over 80% of teens use a cell phone regularly, a common medium for cyberbullying. In 2018, 25% of the population self-harmed themselves because of cyberbullying.
